Song of the Day. Maybe Tomorrow

It's Monday again. I think this beat pretty much covers the vibe...
Slow, rock-ish beats are what Mondays are all about, and maybe some vino...

Retronaut

It makes me quite sad when people store all their photos in a memory card. What happened to old-school photo albums? Although I feel sometimes it is incredible what we can achieve through technology, I do miss smelling an old book, or looking at retro pictures of my parents and their bad hair..

My latest discovery is by far one of the greatest of the year. I can proudly say, I will start 2012 with a smile, because now I have Retronaut.
Created by Chris Wilde, a man from Oxfordshire, England. His creation is a massive database of photographs. Anything from replicas, art, celebs, it's there.
I like to think of Retronaut as 'Online's purest form of vintage.'
The website is so well constructed it has a timeline, so you can look for pictures from a specific decade of pretty much, anywhere between 1500s until now.

You don't believe me? Have a look...

Air Hostess through the years

Cartoon Skeletons

As you can see, anything and everything is available. If you're looking to pass the time, stop feeding your sheep on facebook and learn a bit about history, or anything for that matter!

Kudos Retronaut!

Song of the Day. The Bad in Each Other

This song goes to Gez.
Anyone who hasn't had a chance to listen to the latest album by Feist, please give it a shot! This is what I like to call a 'Red Velvet Cupcake'. Too good to be trueeeeee

:P

Sano Hair

My favourite hair salon is located only a few steps from my door. I came across it on a very windy day when someone I know needed a haircut. We decided to look around (Angel is full of hair salons), but as soon as I saw their beautiful window, I was in love..

Sano was established by hair stylist, Takashi Sano, who has colalborated in multiple editorial shoots. Wallpaper magazine and Esquire are amongst his portfolio full of multiple achievements.

Sano hair's staff is not only friendly but also creative. Most of the staff have to split their time between photoshoots and working at the salon.

There is nothing that annoys me more than pretencious stylists, but at Sano, they know how to please their customers by having accessible prices, and making sure your hair experience is fun, creative and pleasant!

Go and visit, I highly recommend it!

Kudos Sano!

Where's Andre3000???!!!!! I love this song, I swear he is from the future...

Fancy some Folksy

Folksy folks, is the home of British craft. Hate to put it this way, but it's like the UK version of Etsy.
Folksy is a website where you can find almost anything. The advantage that Folksy brings to its customers is the ability to not only buy but also to sell. You can set up your own virtual shop, and you can sell almost anything!
From clothes, to home and garden items, Folksy is the place to find the perfect gift. Their merchandise is so varied they also supply fabrics, beads, buttons... you name it...
The advantages of shopping here are:
Originality. You will find affordable gifts, that nobody else will have. Every designer/seller only makes a few items of each, so it makes it extra special.

These are my favourite:

Big Bow Bag, Bridget Jane

Shoulder bag, Cafe print, Black Cactus in London

Strawberry Jam tart bobby pin, Orimiu

Rewind!Cassette Tape table lamp, RawDezign

Coffee cozy, Mouthy Mitts

Blue candelabra 15" napkins, Daisy Patchwork

Folksy is a great opportunity for designers and creative minds to showcase and sell their work. Let's support the cause!

Song of the Day. Close to my fire

Sometimes I still feel like a zombie on Mondays. This music doesn't help, but it feels good :P

Board Gaming.

Lately, it seems as if we are all too busy with technology to spend actual time with each other. Evidence? Hm, I do it all the time. I sit with my laptop in the living room, and so does my flatmate. The third one arrives only to sit in the sofa and use his phone to check the latest 'updates'. I can't take it anymore. That's why this Xmas I am arriving to my mum's house with an arsenal of board games. People are obliged to spend time with me, and if I get sick of it towards the end, I can say I tried.

Here's what I'll bring.

Monopoly is always a must. Everybody likes it, and although it gets quite annoying towards the end, it's always fun. Let's face it, there is always that one who takes over everything and buys all the hotels and restaurants possible. That's the annoying part, to sit there and watch defeat coming slowly...

Monopoly Seinfeld Limited Edition

Next on the list is Apples to Apples. This is a game of comparisons. With over 1,000 cards comparing places, people, things and events it is a guaranteed evening of fun in a box.

Apples to Apples

My personal favourite is the Logo Board Game. It reminds me of the good old days when I played this with a friend, and he just didn't have a clue... What a loser! Who doesn't know Logos nowadays? This game is not only fun, but I believe it gives people the opportunity to talk. Brands are a great way of starting a conversation!
Challenge your relatives this Xmas, play in teams, or just partner up and see what surprises you find along the way.

The Logo Board Game

Here's something for the technology-addicted minds of today. I present you with the 'Real' version of Angry Birds. The popular app has been transformed into material blocks of TNT yei! Build different structures, catapult your birds and play! This beats the digital version, come on!

Angry Birds on Thin Ice

Raise your hand if you love Tetris! The classic game is back, just in a different format.

Spending time together is not that bad. Improve the fun by having a few drinks with the family!
Let's play!

Song of the Day. Postcards from Italy.

My neighbour, who rocks by the way, had a party on Friday. She is known for her excellent parties.
This song is for Doris, who I met at the party.
Doris, you're cool.. I couldn't find a better video, but oh well...

Kudos to Doris who rocks, like my neighbour!

Sanrio Xmas.

This is my wishlist:

Hello Kitty string light. Why I need it? Simple, I can use it for any party, not only Xmas. I can even put it by my window, or in my terrace. Definitely.

How nice would it be to receive this in the post? Cuteness all the way...

Hello Kitty strawberry earphones. Unfortunately I am one of those people who keeps losing hers, so I am confident that I will NOT lose these lovelies.

Keroppi rocks. He will make sure you put coins in there, with its biiiiigggg biiiiggg eyes.

The Nooka and Hello Kitty watch is amazing. I want it so bad. It is one of those things my kids will see in a few years and think that it's a prop from 'Back to the Future' or its equivalent. Lolz.

What can I say? A girl needs to dry her hair.

Ha, I'm just too much... peace out.

Song of the Day. E-Pro

I went to the rugby yesterday. I love rugby men, they just don't care at all. They are messy, huge, and for some reason most of them have really long hair. The atmosphere in the air however, is totally different. People are respectful, everybody seems to get along, and it is just fun. I was a bit skeptical at first, but consider me a part of the 'rugby club' or whatever.

This song is for Rugby.

Calendars 2012

I do not like Xmas. I repeat, I don't like it at all. However, I believe that everybody deserves a present. Not counting birthdays, it is rare to see people giving things to each other anymore. I just blame it on the economy.. and my addiction to shoes...

So, this Xmas everyone is getting a calendar from me. The beauty of calendars is that you can just hang it in the kitchen, the office, etc. Calendars are just cool. Nowadays more and more shops sell them in all kinds of themes. Museums always have great selections on display and shops like Paperchase, or my online friend Amazon, offer a lot of variety; not only in designs but also in price.

These are my favourite ones:

Paperchase, Vogue 2012

 Paperchase, Art Nouveau  2012

Amazon, 365 days of shoes

Amazon, Secret Garden 2012

As you can see, there is an option for ALL! So, save yourself some time and money and buy calendars all around. :)

Song of the Day. Ne Me Laisse Pas L'Aimer

Frenching.

Verb for doing things that are quintessentially French.  Eating cheese and croissants, growing a mustache (if you're a man) and pairing it with a striped jumper and a baguette in hand. Listening to Brigitte Bardot.

Ok, the concepts above are only a few examples of things I do that make me feel like I'm Frenching, except for the moustache part.

Don't you love how ALL french songs are not sung but more like spoken? It is such a French thing to dooo! You see???

Love u Brigitte, you are soooo beautiful!!!!!!!!
Kudos to your Frenchness!!! Xx

Chocolate and Banana Cupcakes.

Simple yet delicious. Childhood memories come afloat when I taste chocolate and banana. It is an awesome combination and those who don't like it are plain fools!
So, with my heating broken, I have decided to do some baking... Baking of cupcakes! Maybe the oven will keep me warm.
Definitely the best recipe book for these type of things is the Primrose Bakery Book, it has definitely gained the status of cupcake Bible.

Here is the recipe, but be sure to always follow the instructions. I believe that cupcake baking can be very creative and fun, but the key is to always follow the recipe, or you might end up with Flubber instead of a cupcake. Trust me, I've been there. Experimentation is not the way to go with this...

To make 12 regular cupcakes you will need:

125g unsalted butter at room temperature
250g caster sugar
2 eggs free range lightly beaten
1 teaspoon good-quality vanilla extract
250g plain flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking powder
4 riped bananas mashed with a fork
175g good-quality dark chocolate. Preferably 70% cocoa solid, broken into small pieces

To decorate and make the chocolate buttercream icing you will need:

Chopped walnuts
175g good-quality dark chocolate (70%)
225g unsalted butter, room temperature
1tablespoon semi-skimmed milk, at room temperature
1 teaspoon good-quality vanilla extract
250g icing sugar, sifted

Ok, so now that all the ingredients are on the table it's time to start preparing them wooo!!

Preheat the oven to 160C(fan)/180C/350F/gas mark 4. (wow, so many conversions)..
Line a 12 hole muffin tray with the appropriate size cupcake cases.

In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar, until the mixture is pale and smooth, which should take 3-5min using an electric hand mixer.
Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and beat again briefly. Add the flour and baking powder and beat again until well combined. Stir in the mashed bananas and chocolate pieces using a wooden spoon.

Carefully spoon the mixture into the cupcake cases, filling them to about two thirds full. Only two thirds!!!

Bake in the oven for about 25 min. To check if they are cooked use the old trick of inserting a skewer in the MIDDLE of the cakes. The skewer is meant to come out clean!!!

Remove from the oven and leave the cakes in their tins for about 10 minutes before placing them on a wire rack to cool.
So, I don't have a wire rack because I am not obsessed with baking, I mean I can hardly fit half of my cutlery and plates in my kitchen! Just use a flat surface... don't panic!
Once the cupcakes have cooled off we can start with the icing!

To make the icing start by melting the chocolate in a bowl or plastic jug in the microwave until it's smooth and of thick consistency. Maybe 30 second intervals, stirring in between might be the best technique to obtain the perfect consistency and avoid burning the choc. Leave to cool slightly.

In a large mixing bowl beat the butter, milk, vanilla and icing sugar until smooth. This might take a while, but patience is a key quality in any good baker. Add the melted chocolate and beat again until thick and creamy. If it looks too runny when it comes to icing the cupcakes, just keep beating, this can only improve the consistency.

Yes, now you can lick the spoon!

Add the walnuts on top of each cupcake to give them that 'Primrose look'.

So there you go, easy, effortless and it has chocolate in it.

Kudos Primrose Bakery! Now I can eat my cupcakes by the fireplace! yep yeppp xx

I need to chill. These past few weeks have been a bit intense. This song by Morcheeba always gives me the impression I'm on a beach, living in another time..

Song of the Day. Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag.

I swear LL Cool J just doesn't age. I watched an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, and he's in it! And he looks just the same..
There's something about his constant lip licking that makes me uncomfortable. I made the awful mistake of muting one of his videos on tv once and all I could see were his lips, it's like his tic. I couldn't sleep for weeks...

Despite his funky habits, he is COOL. Lolz. So Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag Getting Crushed By Buildings had to be played.

You're cool LL.. too cool..

The Geffrye Museum of the Home

London rocks in so many ways.. awesome pubs and venues, funky neighbourhoods, street art... aww the list goes on. Museums however, are a huge reason of why people come to this city.. at least I know I did. The Tate Modern, the Natural History Museum come on!!

There are other museums around that sometimes due to their location, people don't even know they exist. The Museum of the Home is one of those examples. It still shocks me that people don't know where the V&A Childhood museum is.. seriously???!!

So, The Museum of the Home... wow, where to start??

The Geffrye Museum of the home is by far one of the most incredible museums in London. Situated in  Shoreditch, this 18th century building is not only home to the Geffrye Museum, but also to a stunning garden, I mean it's super-ultra-beautiful and it surrounds the entire property.
This museum is dedicated to teaching us about the importance of the home in Britain through the centuries. Every single room is decorated with accessories, plants, and patterns from a specific time.
This is an excellent place to go on a day out, it is free entry and totally children friendly.
For example, you can sit in a 1630's chair replica, touch different materials used for decoration and listen to extracts from newspapers and books of the time..

I have tried describing this place so many times, but it is one of those museums that you must check out for yourself. They have a lovely restaurant and their souvenir shop does not disappoint!

Just do it! Guaranteed fun! xx

BBC 4 World Cinema Awards 2011

I had the luck to be invited by one of my dear friends to the BBC World Cinema Awards the other night. The event took place at the BFI and it will be televised tomorrow.
The nominees included productions from all around the world. From Almodovar to Iranian cinema, the nominees were varied and different. Jonathan Ross as a host is great, but hey he is really tall. I was impressed by his height, I thought he was small.. like a smartie.

The winner this year is called 'A Separation', and it is a beautiful Iranian movie, filmed like a documentary. I don't want to say much about the plot, but I highly recommend it. It evokes a lot of emotion, and it is definitely a bit controversial.

To be honest, I wish the BBC invested a bit more budget on these kind of award ceremonies. The BBC has always been known for being extremely culturally aware, but on this occasion I felt as if they just did not care about it at all. All the movies screened seemed to be worth watching, at least most of them. However, it is sad to see how events like these are put in the corner, while the Twilight premieres gather thousands..
What a shame..

Congratulations however to the winner and to French actress Isabelle Huppert, who won the world cinema achievement award!

Kudos! xx.. not you BBC!

Degas and the Ballet Picturing Movement @ RA

Once again, the Royal Academy of Arts has curated a beautiful exhibition. Quelle surprise! This time it is all about Ballet. I love ballet and I am not a ballerina, nor I follow any of the news about ballet. What is true is that Ballet is one of the eldest forms of expression through dance. Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

This exhibition will show the visitors the development of ballet imaginery through Degas' career. Drawings, pastels and sculptures will give an insight into the world of ballet.

One good reason to go and see this exhibition is the originality of Degas. He was a pioneer, he experimented constantly and he is portrayed as radical..
His work is breath taking and full of life.

Let's do this!!!

Monday Lips.

Everybody looks awful on Mondays. Sorry, but it's a fact. Therefore, I always attempt to focus the attention on my lips rather than on my crazy hangover eyes. The same hangover I've been dragging with a leash since Saturday. Yei!

Girls, let's make them bright and shiny!!

This is my 'pelican fly' pink. I love it and I know Minaj would love it too. Pink shades keep getting more and more variations, making it impossible not to buy at least one colour! This lipstick is filled with Vitamin E to help moisturise your lips!

Nars Matte Lipstick, Funny Face

The night will come, and as much as men don't like to kiss glossy lips they will have to cope. This YSL white gold gloss is everything you dreamt of when you were a little youth.. lolz

YSL Golden gloss, Shimmering gold collection

Bobby Brown released a 20th anniversary lip palette. The reason why I like it is because it has every colour under the sun. Perfect for winter or summer. Night or day.
Bobby Brown 20th Anniversary Lip Palette

Here is another Bobby Brown lipstick. Violet is definitely my colour of the season. Don't care what anyone else has to say about it. Violet is very versatile and feminine, it can be used in different materials and patterns. This lipstick is full of glitter, all I can think of is Madonna and Hard Candy..

Bobby Brown, metallic lip color, Violet Gaze

Last but definitely not least, another shade of pink. This one is so much brighter than the one above. I like it because it makes the perfect accessory for a perfect smile.

So there you have it. Lips that steal the spotlight.

Song of the Day.

My roots.. Lolz.

Frost in the frost. (The Heart/Star Theory)

It's time for some bling. The irony of how accessories warm a woman's heart is indescribable.

The joy of buying earrings, necklaces and bracelets starts since you are a baby. Come on, shiny objects fascinate young children, and most girls LOVE making their own accessories with sparkly materials and glitter. (Ke$ha would be proud).

Ok, so first piece of the day is a ring that will make you drool. The colours are trendy as fudge. I like it because it is big, but not ridiculously huge. Rings should be accessories, not pets, or extra fingers.

Kenneth Jane Swarovski ring

Pink glitz. It's like marshmallows! Beautiful earrings can change the whole shape of your face. These ones are perfect for a night out or for a day at the office. Always glamorous.
River Island pink encrusted earrings

Have I ever told you about my 'Heart/Star' theory? It's like people who like cats or people who prefer dogs. According to my extensive experience attending girls' schools I can assure you that those girls who draw and love hearts, don't like stars. Girls who like stars definitely don't like hearts. It's not that they hate them, they just prefer either one or the other.. I swear!
River Island blue diamante star stud earrings

These are just soo Katy Perry meets the Petshop Boys! Oh damn, so many things are going through my head right now; 80s music, bubblegum smell,  Pop Art..

Erickson Beamon neon lucite crystal earrings

If Peter Pan was a girl, she would wear this!
Venessa Arizaga heroes and villains charm necklace

As you can probably tell I am a hearts girl. I draw them all the time. Stars are too complicated...

River Island pink face heart necklace

The good thing about accessories like jewellery is that it is difficult for them to go out of trend. Allegedly, a friend of mine says that 'due to how personal it is to choose jewellery and with the vast variety that can be found,  it is possible to find options for different tastes. Therefore, people make jewellery their own.'
She's not wrong, think about it... The most common objects that pass from generation to generation are mainly rings, earrings, brooches, etc.

Joy Geometric necklace

Joy owl ring

This is to remind me that Xmas is not that awful. Yes I am one of those Xmas haters.. well, let's just say I don't see the point. However, gingerbread man is funny :P

Joy Ginger bread man necklace

My pulse is terrible. I shake, i shake like a blender. I can't draw :(
I like hand painted stuff because it reminds me of how others are much more talented than I am at so many things. Ok, I don't know if this bangle is hand painted but it looks like it...
Oliver Bonas kingfisher bangle

Well, that was a loooot of bangles and blings and bubblegum smells... Awesome!
